It’s going to be a hot weekend, let’s talk scarves and “décolletage defence”

Who knew the word décolletage came from the French ‘to de-collar’, and hence expose, the upper chest? It’s one of the few nouns we can think of for a negative space: that area of skin exposed by an open shirt or low-cut garment. That really, really, delicate area of skin. That area of delicate skin we faithfully cover in sunscreen every summer.

Until one day we don’t. Maybe it was a sunscreen fail, because consumer organisations have proved some sunscreens just don’t live up to their claims. Maybe we were in a hurry and didn’t dedicate the boring minutes needed to ensure we put enough on, everywhere. Result: a horrible red, painful décolletage sunburn. That’s bad enough, but worse, it doesn’t fade like sunburn on other parts of the body. It’s still there a few weeks later, when once more (FACE-PLANT) we forget to sunscreen that delicate, delicate skin AGAIN, because it’s summer and it’s hot and we just want to live our damn lives and leave the house on time just for ONCE.  And now that poor décolletage is really stressed and the skin is reddened and there are literally months of summer left. What to do?

Sort it with a light silk scarf. Wind it gently around your neck and knot it loosely in front. Tuck the ends in if you’re operating heavy machinery or toddlers, or leave them to lift and float in the breeze. You won’t overheat, because silk is so light and you can still go sleeveless – a covered décolletage looks awesome with sleeveless. Wear a scarf every time you go outside, and now that your skin’s protected it can recover.

If you keep wearing scarves, your décolletage’s skin will remain as flawless as the skin on the other parts of your body which are always covered. And for those of us (cough, cough) for whom the sun damage message arrived too late to save our décolletages, a light silk scarf worn with breezy summer clothes not only covers the evidence, it looks as chic as hell.
